  • Was inducted into the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 1985

  • Was the boys track and field coach at Woodmore from 1969 through 1984; also coached at Haskins, Otsego, and Woodville High Schools; his teams won 12 league titles and one district track meet; coached three individual state high school track and field champions

  • Was the boys cross country coach at Woodmore from 1968 through 1983; was the runner-up in the state meet once and won five conference titles

  • Was the head girls cross country coach at Woodmore from 1978 through 1983; won two conference and one district meet

  • Coached for a total of 28 years

  • Won 262 dual/tri track meets; won 158 dual/tri boys cross country meets; and 38 dual/tri girls cross country meets

  • Also coached the first two boys basketball teams at Woodmore (1968-69 and 1969-70) leading the team to 11 wins both seasons and the Lakeshore Conference championship in 1969-70

  • In April, 1985, the Woodmore track was dedicated in his name coinciding with his induction into the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame

  • Mr. Smithey passed away in 2009
