Class of 1975 – Football, Track and Field
All-Suburban Lakes League (SLL) football player at Woodmore; was a first-team All-SLL selection on both sides of the ball as a senior
Three-time state placer at the Class AA state meet; state shot put champion in 1974, was third in 1975 in the shot put and 5th in the discus
His throw of 58-1 ½ in the shot put to win state is still the school record
Won the shot put (55-9) and the discus (162-6) SLL titles as a senior helping Wildcats to the league title
Was the SLL champ in the shot put (54-8 ½) and discus (148-8) as a junior; was second in the shot put and discus at the SLL meet as a sophomore helping Wildcats to the team title
He is also the school record-holder in basketball with 29 rebounds in a game in 1975
Earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan helping the Wolverines to Big Ten championships in 1976, 1977, 1978; lettered in each of those three seasons at Michigan on the offensive line; Michigan played in a bowl game all three seasons and were ranked in the top 10 in the country all three seasons
Was a 1st-team all-Big Ten selection in 1978, and was an honorable mention All-American
In 1979, he was a first-round draft choice (24th overall selection) of the Miami Dolphins and he played in all 16 games his rookie season
In 1980, he became the Dolphins’ starting offensive left tackle, a position he would play the rest of his career
Enjoyed a 10-year career with the Dolphins where he played for Hall of Fame coach Don Shula and blocked for Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino
Played in 126 regular season games in his career making 106 starts helping the Dolphins win four AFC East titles
Was twice named to the All-AFC team during his career and he played in two Super Bowls (1982 (Super Bowl 17) and 1984 (Super Bowl 19)); was a Pro Bowl alternate twice
Played in 12 postseason games in career
Miami had an 85-40-1 record in the games he played in career
He helped the Dolphins lead or tie for the league lead in fewest sacks allowed in each of his final seven seasons
In 2018, Giesler earned a star on the Dolphins’ Walk of Fame at Hard Rock Stadium
